English Lacrosse has committed to providing Surrey with a genuine lacrosse legacy from the 2017 FIL Rathbones Lacrosse World Cup.
Since 2016, English Lacrosse have appointed a Surrey Community and World Cup Legacy Officer, to assist in achieving this legacy. A key initiative developed in conjunction with Active Surrey has been the Surrey Youth Lacrosse League.
The SYLL registered 23 boys and girls aged between 11 and 15, many of whom were introduced to lacrosse through the Surrey Youth Games. English Lacrosse hopes to build on the success of this programme next summer, utilising the Women’s World Cup to further promote the League.
Additionally, we have created a Guildford Lacrosse Club, which is based at Surrey Sports Park. The club started in January 2016 and currently has four sections (men’s, women’s, junior girls, junior boys) and nearly 80 registered members. The Men’s team achieved promotion from SEMLA East Division 3 in their first season. For more information on the club, please visit the club’s Facebook Page.
The next programme to be developed as part of the legacy commitment is a casual Adult pick-up lacrosse league. Launched in January 2017, this programme will take place midweek at Egham Leisure Centre. Training will cover basic skills and rules of the game, but sessions will largely centre around fun, small-sided games.
