English Lacrosse saddened by passing of Anthony Hayes

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Heaton Mersey and England Men’s player, Anthony Hayes.

Ant was a well-known and extremely popular member of the lacrosse community, regarded as a charismatic and fun-loving character who gave so much to the game over many years.

He represented England at Under 19 level, was part of England senior squads and 1st team captain at Heaton Mersey.

Richard Smith, coach at Heaton Mersey, said: ‘Anthony was a great, fit lad who was at the centre of everything at the club.

‘I coached him from an early age and he was my ‘mini me’. We all loved him hugely and the whole club is in a real state of shock.’

Tom Wenham, England Men’s Head Coach, was a part of Ant’s journey as a lacrosse player for a number of years.

He commented: ‘I was lucky enough to be involved with Ant firstly with the Under 19s in 2008 and more recently following his initial selection for senior squad training in the build up to the 2016 European Championships.

‘Ant played his lacrosse like he lived his life, with energy, passion and an enormous sense of fun. He leaves an irreplaceable hole but also a huge number of cherished memories.’

On behalf of everyone at English Lacrosse, we would like to offer our sincere condolences and thoughts to Anthony’s family, Heaton Mersey Lacrosse Club and his friends within the game at this extremely difficult time.
