Cheshire Come From Behind To Win Referee’s Trophy

Cheshire came from behind to retain the annual Referee’s Trophy against Lancashire at the weekend.

The two evenly matched rivals traded goals throughout providing the onlooking crowd at Wilmslow Lacrosse Club with an exciting contest to watch between the two NW counties.

The opening quarter saw Cheshire’s Sam Davidson, Tom Brook and Tom Gosnay all on target. For Lancashire, Zac Guy and Matt Collier opened their accounts in the game.

Lancashire dominated the second quarter with three un-answered goals from Pete Hayes, Josh Kinder and Jamie Gallagher to give the red rose’s a two goal advantage at the half.

The third quarter went much the same way as the second for Cheshire with Lancashire dominating possession and looking like walking away with a victory.

Heaton Mersey duo Josh Turner and Ryan Hunns both scored and Boardman’s Matthew Collier scored his second in the game. Rochdale’s Glen Humphries also opened his account in the game with an EMO goal shortly afterward.

Luckily for Cheshire Tom Gosnay and Jamie Butler both scored to keep their team within four going in to the final period. (Score 5-9).

The final quarter was undoubtably the most exciting for the neutral with Cheshire dominating the quarter, especially from the face-off X thanks to Tom Brook and Chris Brady.

This allowed Cheshire to produce a 7 goal come-back with Josh Sherry-Brennan (2), Sam Patterson, Tom Brook, Paul Flowers, Tom Gosnay and Jamie Butler on hand to provide the goals.

Lancashire replied with goals from Josh Hurry and Ryan Sweetman and an impressive goal by Zac Guy to take the game into overtime.

The first two periods of overtime saw both sides trade goals, Glen Humphries scoring for Lancashire and Tom Gosnay converting his third of the game on an EMO.

The game progressed to Sudden Victory (Golden Goal) after a tense couple of minuets and chances by both teams, Cheshire’s Bill Fisher scooped a loose ball and mounted a fast break on the Lancashire back three.

Fisher moved the ball to Josh Sherry-Brennan who swiftly beat his man top-side to slot in the winner past Pete Hayes and claim the Referee’s Trophy for Cheshire. Final score 14-13.
