Durham University Make English Lacrosse History

Durham has become the first ever University to be awarded the ‘English Lacrosse High Performance University’ status. This award recognises the quantity and quality of talent delivered through the lacrosse programme at Durham University. This is the first award of its kind and is part of English Lacrosse’s development of the Elite Playing Pathway.

We are delighted to have secured High Performance status with English Lacrosse. It is crucial that universities work as closely as possible with Governing Bodies and this award is a consequence of five years of working in partnership to develop a programme that meets the needs of all parties.

Quentin Sloper, Durham University Head of Sport

English Lacrosse has increased its work in the university sector over the last four years; the addition of the University High Performance status is a natural progression in the overall development.
Many current members of Team England (men and women) attend or have attended University. The High Performance University programme gives prospective talented students the confidence when choosing a University that they will receive quality coaching and competition, in addition to other types of support such as strength & conditioning coaching and physiotherapy. High Performance Universities also offer scholarships and have facilities that cater for talented athletes.

The programme is important for male and female players involved or aspiring to be part of Team England to be able to access high quality training and playing opportunities to continue with their own personal development.

High Performance Universities will work closely with English Lacrosse in developing their university programme and includes not only supporting talented players, but also developing student leadership and lacrosse participation within the university and wider community.

Durham have demonstrated their high level of commitment to the development of lacrosse within the University which has translated to success in BUCS competitions and growing the sport as a whole.  English Lacrosse will continue to work with Durham University in strengthening the partnership.

English Lacrosse is looking to make further High Performance University Awards. David Coldwell, National Club Development Manager said, ” High Performance Universities are an important step for English Lacrosse.  Talented athletes are not only searching for a University that meets their academic requirements but also one that will assist in developing their lacrosse careers.  High Performance Universities give students involved our Team England pathway the support that is required to achieve international success. I hope that there are more universities that will want to create strong partnerships such as the one forged with Durham.
