Durham University retain the BUCS Men’s Championship

Durham attackman Keegan Bal scored eight goals, to propel Team Durham to a 20-11 victory over Leeds Metropolitan University in the 2014 BUCS Men’s Championship Final at Surrey Sports Park.

The last time these two teams met, back in November Durham beat Leeds Metropolitan by a margin of twenty. In the opening quarter, Leeds Metropolitan showed they were up to the challenge, opening the scoring in the first minute.

Durham were quick to reply with a number of efforts on goal, but Leeds Metropolitan goalie Alex Pearson made a string of excellent saves. Pearson could not hold Durham at bay for long; they took the first quarter 2-4.

Durham showed their class in the second quarter, keen to push the tempo on transition and exhibit excellent ball movement when playing settled 6v6. The strong second quarter performance ensured that Durham held a 10-goal lead at half time.

The third quarter saw a period of in-discipline for Durham, which allowed Leeds Metropolitan to capitalize with a number of man-up opportunities. Sam Dexter rifled home two goals with a long-pole and Henry Northrop also added a couple. Northrop shined for Leeds Metropolitan; the crafty attacker finished with five goals in the game.

Durham stamped their authority in the final period and adding four goals to their tally to take the game out of reach for Leeds Metropolitan in the final period, and retain the title for the fourth consecutive year.
