England Masters 50+ Perform in Denver

An England Lions team, playing in the Over 50s age group at the World Championships, scored the first national success of the tournament by beating a US Navy veterans team, yesterday.

They were edged out of a tight encounter with a Maryland outfit but progressed to the knock-out stages where they will face a Princeton side.

The goals were shared around Rochdale’s Martin Humphreys, Phil Holland of Norbury, Simon Bickerton of Leeds and Wacs’ legend Jonty Smith.

The 18-man squad, drawn from players around the country, have been supporting the England team and playing in a 12-team division at the Festival, which has attracted thousands of players at age groups starting at Under 11 and reaching Over 60s.
