This weekend saw 20 teams from all over the country including Scotland and Wales descend upon the University of Hertfordshire, to compete for the title of National POP Lacrosse Champions. The competing teams successfully qualified through regional stages to secure their place at the finals.
Hale Prep qualified for the nationals via the North West POP Lacrosse event which was incorporated into this year’s Greater Manchester School Games for the first time. Hale’s hard work and effort throughout the day certainly paid off as they qualified top of Pool A in the round robin stage, which saw them up against St Charles Borromeo in the quarter finals, they won 11-4, thus setting up a northern semi final against Gatley. The atmosphere was very exciting with coaches and parents from both teams cheering from the sidelines. It was a fast paced, end to end game, with both teams showing determination and drive with the aim to reach the final. Final Score: Hale Prep 7 – 3 Gatley.
With Hale prep securing their place in the final, it was now the turn of Sunninghill and Gorsey Bank to compete for the last spot. Sunninghill had competed in the same Pool as Hale Prep in the round robin stage and finished second, Gorsey Bank had too finished second in Pool B. Both teams played some great pop, but Sunninghill were the winners beating Gorsey Bank 6-1, to secure their place in the final.
The final saw both teams playing their best POP lacrosse, in a nail biting game. With 20 seconds left on the clock the scores were all level at 6 -6, Hale took possession and with the last shot of the game scored just a second before the final whistle went.
Final score: Hale Prep 7 – 6 Sunninghill
Whilst the Championship final was taking place on pitch 1, the Plate final was being played on pitch 2.
The plate finalists were Coulsdon v Killearn (Scotland), this was another great game, which saw Coulsdon crowned plate champions winning 8-5.
English Lacrosse would like to thank all the schools who competed in the tournament and hope to see you at the 2014 POP Regional and National finals.
