Having just watched Team England’s women progress to the the gold medal game it was now up-to the men’s team to follow their lead. Up against the host nation the Netherlands in Wagner Stadium.
England started brightly with Tom Gallon scoring the opening goal with a fast break straight from the face. Nick Watson added a second followed swiftly by Ben Lyons whom netted England’s third. The Netherlands first goal was scored by Ingmar Bolderink coming from a well worked man-up opportunity. Colin Clive added England’s fourth with a neat quick stick shot, the Netherlands scored the last goal of the quarter thanks to Scott Janssen. 4 – 1
The Second quarter started with England on the back foot as The Netherlands added their third of the game thanks again to Scott Janssen. England looking for a quick reply turned to Colin Clive as he netted his second of the game. Glen Humphreys and Ady Bennett rounded off the scoring to ensure England went in to the half time break with a 7-3 lead.
With Englands cheering section in full swing the lads came out all guns blazing in the second half adding a further three goals to their tally and only allowing one goal to be conceded. England goals came from Tom Gosnay, Tom Gallon and Jack Brook.
Sam Russell, Tom Gosnay, Glen Humphreys and Oliver White did the damage in the fourth quarter to ensure the game was out of reach of the dutch and allowing England to progress the championship game.
England completed the game with 10 different scorers to round off a great team performance. The aggressive defensive style also ensured England enjoyed a high turnover percentage from the Dutch.
