In a repeat of last year’s final, Poynton defeated pre-match favourites Cheadle to repeat last year’s success and claim their second Senior Flags in a row.
The Blackbirds completed what turned out to be a fairly comfortable 14-8 victory against Cheadle, who were looking to make it a league and cup double after winning the NEMLA Premiership with a 100% record
Poynton raced into a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter with goals from Hunter Hall, Sam Russell and Sam Davidson putting them ahead.
Ady Bennett pulled one back for Cheadle, however that was to be a rare breakthrough as Poynton then went on a 4-0 streak running into early in the 3rd quarter.
Poynton produced a ruthless display in attack, spreading the goals around with second scores for Sam Russell and Hunter Hall and goals also for Alex Russell and Tom Giddings, surging Poynton into a 7-1 lead.
The Blackbirds’ potency in attack was complimented by a dominant display at the face-off and in midfield from match MVP Tom Brook who secured possession for his side numerous times to set-up his side’s offense.
And at the other end, England goalie Will Baxter again increased his reputation as one of the best in the country with a string of saves, contributing to a 2nd quarter shut-out of an opposition who have averaged over 15 goals a game in the Premiership this season.
Ady Bennett ended the scoring streak to pull one back for Cheadle, however, it did nothing to stem the tide at the other end with Poynton adding another three quick-fire goals with one apiece for the Russells and a goal for Sam Hewitt.
Staring a heavy defeat in the face, Cheadle began a mini rally with a goal from Matt Boyd before a Dan Condron double pulled the deficit back to five, at 10-5.
However, the Cheadle momentum was swiftly killed by Andrew Brickell firing a long-range effort on the bounce into the top corner to put Poynton 11-5 up at ¾ Time.
Another goal for Sam Davidson was countered by two Ady Bennett efforts, who fought valiantly to keep Cheadle in touch, finishing as the highest scorer of the match (4), however Cheadle’s inability to secure possession from resulting face-offs curtailed any possibility of a comeback.
A Sam Dexter strike sandwiched between hat-trick goals for both Alex Russell and Davidson put Poynton 14-8 up and last year’s champions then ran the clock down well in the final minutes to take the title.
The victory represents a remarkable achievement for the club who had never won the Senior Flags before last year in the history of the competition.
