With their victory over Team Australia and with the final game in the Blue Division now decided, England are placed fourth overall and will now face the Czech Republic in the Quarter Finals. The Czechs beat the host nation Finland in their play-in game and the two will meet on Wednesday at 5.00pm GMT.
England’s final game in round robin play was a defeat to a very strong Team Canada still riding a high from their first win over the USA last Saturday.
England went four down in the opening quarter before Ryan Sweetman netted England’s first goal. However Canada added another to finish the opening quarter 5-1.
Team Canada stepped up a gear in the second quarter, scoring three unanswered goals before James Hewitt impressed again for England making a string of great saves. However Canada’s momentum continued and they finished the quarter 13-1 up.
Goalie Mike Connor took over from his counterpart James Hewitt at half time and was immediately tested as he was forced to make two terrific saves. He and his defence managed to allow only three goals in the third with Team Canada still in front 17-1 at the end of the period.
Ryan Hunns opened the scoring in the fourth and in the dying moments of the game Matthew Boyd finished with the last goal of the game. Canada ran out the victors with the final score finishing 22-3 and go top of the blue division.
If Team England progress through their Quarter Final match-up against the Czech-Republic they will again face the Canadians in the Semi-Finals, as they claim an automatic place as they finish top of the Blue Division.
