Nymburk, Czech Republic (August 15, 2015) – Team England defeated Wales 11-8 at the Sportovni Centrum on Saturday to become the 2015 ELF Women’s European Champions and the first six-time ELF European winner.
Wales took an early lead in the first two minutes, with Lulu Rowlands netting a free position. England were quick to reply and went on a five goal run, with Torz Anderson leading the charge with two goals. Sophie Brett, Sarah Taylor and Laura Merrifield each contributed a goal to give Team England a commanding 5-1 lead.
Wales mounted a challenge in closing minutes of the first half, with goals from Jocelyn Robinson, Ros Lloyd-Rout, Iona Dryden and Becky Thomas (2), but England would reply with a brace of goals from Charlotte Lytollis and a single from the game MVP Ruby Smith to go into the half time break with a one goal advantage.
The second half was a nervy and exciting contest with England starting brightest. Torz Anderson completed her hat-trick and Emily Grey scored a single to give the reigning champions some breathing room.
Three time European Champions Wales showed their pedigree and were far from defeated with Iona Dryden scoring her second goal of the game to make the score 10-7. Some excellent defensive team play and goalkeeping kept Wales from scoring more after Team England were forced to play man-down due to a red card.
Team England’s Sophie Morrill scored England’s final goal of the game, assisted by Claire Faram. Wales would go on to score the last goal of the game, with Iona Dryden completing her hat-trick but it was to be in vein as England would run down the clock and secure its sixth European title over their Home Nation rivals 11-8.
