Men’s Winter Classic & Team England Trials announced

English Lacrosse is pleased to announce the launch of the Men’s Winter Classic in response to the Men’s Competitive review. This elite level tournament will bring together groups of players aged 16 and above from across the Talent Pathway. Participants will be invited from the U17 Pathway, the England U19 Squad, England Development Squad and the full England Men’s Senior Squad.

The tournament will take place over 10/11 December and 17/18 December at Platt Lane Sports Complex in Manchester which is Team England Men’s home base and training facility.

Players will be split across four equal strength teams and will play a series of games over both weekends culminating in finals on the last afternoon.

Another first will see England Management use a major elite level domestic tournament as a trial for the 2018 Men’s World Championships with The Men’s Winter Classic incorporating the WC2018 senior trial.

Any player who is eligible to play for England and who wishes to attend the senior trial is welcome to apply and can do so using the link below. Applicant players will then be added to each of the four squads bringing numbers to approximately 25 per team.

The cost is £80 p/p which includes entry to the event for both weekends and a team playing kit of shorts, T-shirt and training bib in team colours. Each team will be allocated a coach for both weekends and there will be team briefing and planning meetings each day.

Tom Wenham, England Men’s Senior Head Coach, commented: “This year’s England Men’s Winter Classic will be the trial process for the selection of the 2018 World Championships squad.

“England coaches will attend throughout the weekend with both the WC2018 and the England Development Squad teams being announced after the tournament. This gives the coaches a fantastic opportunity to watch and assess players while they compete for places over four days playing in an elite level tournament.”

Jane Powell, National Talent Development Manager, added:

“I am delighted to see our Men’s programme getting together the best 100 players who are in contention for a Senior England selection.

“This tournament will afford us the opportunity to see all the players together both home based and overseas, young and old and we will have the perfect opportunity to see who will stand out as a potential player for 2018.”
