It was important weekend at both ends of the table in NEMLA Premiership 1 at the weekend. Despite the poor weather we still had plenty of lacrosse played in NEMLA with the Cheadle v Timperley the highlight of the weekends fixtures.
Despite missing five consecutive weekends of fixtures Timperley showed no signs of being rusty as they were back in action against the league champions Cheadle at Kingsway Sports Club.
The champions started well, taking the lead in the opening quarter with goals from Dan Condron and Nick Watson. They added a third in the second quarter courtesy of Paul Flowers to bring the score to 3-2 at half-time.
In the third Timperley went on a fantastic five goal run to give them a commanding 7-3 lead with less than half and hour remaining in the game. Timperley goals came from Ollie White (3), Mike Armstrong (1), Brain Gillis (1), Cam Lesley (1) and Andrew Brickell (1).
Cheadle battled hard to get back in the game, goals from Nick Watson and Sam Dexter narrowed Timperley’s lead. Dan Condron scored soon after and goals from Darren Baythorpe and Nick Watson pushed Cheadle in front 10-7.
With the light rapidly fading it was decided to bring the game to an end with 12 minutes remaining, with Cheadle still holding on to a three goal lead. Timperley will walk away from the fixture feeling they could have caused a real upset.
Timperley captain Mike Armstrong was still pleased with his teams performance; “We played our game plan for a half and after a poor 3rd quarter were just getting back into it. We had plenty of chances, but we just didn’t score them! We are definitely confident for the return fixture.”
Wilmslow hosted Heaton Mersey in a one sided fixture at the Phoenix Sport Club with Mersey dominating the game 11-3. The result now puts Heaton Mersey on 6 points from 6 games and 5th in the league with three games in hand.
Heaton Mersey will face Timperley this weekend; this will be a crunch match for both clubs as they compete for a top three finish. Wilmslow will face Manchester Waconians in another vital game for both clubs.
The Sheffield Steelers claimed their first points of the season with a 13-9 victory over Rochdale. This result doesn’t change the Steelers league position, they remain bottom with Wilmslow having superior goal difference. Sheffield face Brooklands this weekend.
Rochdale remain in 7th level on points with Manchester Waconians. They travel to Beech Road this weekend to face the league leaders Stockport.
Finally, Brooklands claimed their third win of the season with a 13-8 victory over Manchester Waconians. Brooklands enter an important period over the next two weeks with games against Sheffield Steelers and Timperley.
