NEMLA – Timperley and Poynton close in on the top two

Last weekend saw the majority of the teams in the NEMLA Premiership back in action.

Still undefeated and at the top of the table, Stockport played Sheffield in a one sided fixture. The league leaders started strongly dominating possession, attackman Rick Jones proved his worth in attack again registering 9 assists in the game. Stockport would go on to win the fixture 12-1 with Steelers captain Ben Lyons scoring their only goal.

Cheadle continued their hold on 2nd place with a comfortable 13-5 victory over Brooklands. Attackman Darren Baythorpe showed why he is still one of the best attackmen in the league, providing six assists and scoring one goal. Captain Paul Flowers was Cheadle’s top scorer with 4 goals. Sam Dexter was also on form and scored a hat-rick. Nick Watson and Daniel Smith also got on the scoresheet. Cheadle goalkeeper Nick Anderton was impressive between the pipes registering 14 saves from 19 shots.

Timperley showed why they are the in form team at the moment, beating Wilmslow 22-6. Canadian and current Irish international Brian Gillis was the top goal scorer for Timperley with an impressive 6 goals and 2 assists in the game. Ollie White had an equally impressive haul, he also scored 6 in the game. James Bates scored a hat-rick, Andrew Brickell scored twice as did England international Jack Brook who made a welcome return from a knee injury. Other scorers for Timperley included Mike Armstrong, Oliver Loveland and Jason Armstrong who also got on the scoresheet.

Rochdale hosted Poynton in the other game at the weekend. The Blackbirds came away with a comfortable 13-5 victory and now sit two points behind Cheadle in 2nd place with a game in hand. Attackman Josh Robinson was awarded the MVP for Poynton, registering 3 goals and 2 assists in the game. Poynton now enter a make or break period for the club with the Senior Flags quarterfinals this weekend against Heaton Mersey and a vital fixture in the league against Timperley in two of weeks.

This weekend sees the return of the NEMLA Senior Flags competition. The quarterfinals feature a number of exciting match-ups. League leaders Stockport host in form Timperley the only team to have come close to beating the European Champions this season. Poynton host Heaton Mersey in what will undoubtably be another closely fought game. Reigning champions Cheadle host Manchester Wacs and Brooklands host Wilmslow in what should also be a close game.
