A Tribute to Lee Wilkinson

It is with great sadness to have to announce the untimely and premature passing of Lee Wilkinson at the age of 49.

Lee was the epitome of a ‘born and bred’ Heaton Mersey Lacrosse player having been introduced to the sport as a Junior at an early age, being coached initially by his father, John, and then others as he progressed through the Junior and Senior Men’s playing teams, culminating in his selection as First Team Captain in 1991 where he successfully led the team for many years including winning the Senior Flags Final in 1993 and the League Championship in 1997/8, as well as contesting many other major honours. Lee was an extremely capable and popular defender representing Stockport Metro’s in the 1980s, his county Lancashire, and England in the Vail Shootout Tournament in 1992.

Lee’s passion for the game gave him the opportunity to pursue his love for the United States, travelling to Syracuse in 1998 where he gained employment as an Assistant to the coaching staff at the Syracuse Smash Lacrosse team. Lee subsequently lived and worked in a number of cities in the US, notably Maine, Detroit, San Diego and, latterly, settling in Sausalito, San Francisco and, more particularly, spending time in “Saulito’s” Bar where he met his wife and love of his life, Megan, where she worked. Lee and Megan were married in 2011 and their son, Cooper, was born shortly afterwards in 2012. Cooper was the ‘apple of Lee’s eye’ and to whom he was devoted and immensely proud. A real family man.

Lee made friends easily wherever he travelled as a result of his vivacious personality, wicked sense of humour and wit, and infectious laugh. It is impossible to describe the sense of loss that Megan, Cooper, his parents John and Christine, and brother Steve and the extended Wilkinson family must be feeling, but whilst he will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved him, the memories of Lee will live on forever.

In Lee’s own words, “the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and you have burned so very brightly”. Never have words been more appropriate to describe such a true friend.
