The 2015 Super League season came to completion on Sunday with the Warwick Mavericks lifting the Super League Trophy at Surrey Sports Park for the first time.
The weekend draws to a close another successful season for the newly formed Women’s Super League, with plans to make the league bigger and better next year.
The Championship day started with the semi-finals, with the teams having already been seeded from the previous rounds. #1 Northern Storm faced #4 London Royals and #2 Warwick Mavericks faced #3 Surrey Jets.
Defending champions Northern Storm may have come into the Championships as, but were without SLL goal leader Laura Merrifield due to injury.
In the opening game the Royals caught the defending champions off guard, using their power play in the opening period, and scoring one to take an early 4-2 lead in the game. The second half was a display of offensive dominance from Northern Storm, who fought back and increased the pressure on the Royals.
The Royals could not weather the Storm, and in the final period and the defending champions ensured that they would be competing for the title for a second year in succession – Final score: Northern Storm 9-4 London Royals.
The Storm now had to wait until the result of the Warwick Mavericks vs. Surrey Jets game, to see who they would be facing in the championship game.
In the second semi-final, despite a valiant effort by the Jets, the Mavericks proved to strong for the hosts. The Mavericks scored seven times, including one power play goal to defeat the Jets who scored just one power play goal. Final score: Mavericks – 8, Jets – 2.
The final, was a great exhibition for the league. The game had it all, excellent ball movement, transition and steadfast defensive play.
Despite losing the opening quarter, the Mavericks gave a masterclass on how to breakdown your opponent, and how to control the tempo of the game in your favour.
The Storm is known to play a firebrand style of lacrosse, with an athletic a speedy team, which is hard to break down defensively.
Despite not having as much possession as they would have liked, Storm still managed to keep the scores close until the dying moments of the game.
The Mavericks converted a power play goal in the final quarter to push them over the line and be crowned 2015 Super League Champions.
