The 2018 Rathbones National Schools Lacrosse Championships got underway today with Round 1 of the U19A tournament at Wycombe Abbey School.
The air of anticipation for the start of play on Day 1 was evident as the teams were raring to get going after being denied by the weather last week.
However, the weather gods were acting firmly in our favour, and blue skies accompanied the opening games of the day as 46 teams began their RNSLC18 campaigns.
154 matches took place across the day with the teams playing for the right to advance in to the Championship bracket for Saturday’s play.
2017 winners, Benenden, safely negotiated their passage to the last 16, finishing top of their pool with a 6-1 record, beating St Helen and St Katharine to the number one spot on goal difference, despite losing out to the Oxfordshire side 3-2 in pool play.
Only three teams finished the day with a 100% record after an intense day of competition; last year’s runners-up Lady Eleanor Holles, Berkhamsted, who ousted Guildford High in a group decider, and Caterham, who did the same against Moreton Hall.
Although only 16 teams progress to the U19A Championship group, every team will have something to play for on Day 2 as each team is placed into divisions based on their respective group finishing positions.
On Day 2, The RNSLC18 Under 19 champions will be crowned as well as the rest of the divisional winners.
