National Schools A Big Success

Sherborne Girls were delighted with the success of the National Schools’ Lacrosse Tournament which was hosted by the school for the second year running.

Over 50 schools participated and had travelled from as far as Scotland to take part in the tournament.

The real highlight of the tournament was the Under 19s Premiership finals between St.Swithun’s and Guildford High School, with St Swithun’s beating Guildford 2-1 in extra time.

However, Guildford were able to celebrate after winning the Under 15s Premiership. Sherborne Girls in particular were very pleased with their results on the Saturday, winning all their group matches on day two of the Under 19 tournament and subsequently the Division 3 final.  Congratulations to the team and Alexandra Slade, the school goalkeeper who had an outstanding day.

Nicky Matthias, Head of Sport said: 'It has been a pleasure to host the National Schools Lacrosse for the second year.

'The School and Sports Department have been delighted with the Tournaments organisation from the English Lacrosse Association and the level and standard of play from all the schools competing.

'It has been a privilege to watch the game played to such a high standard.  The majority of schools stayed overnight in local hotels and B&B’s, supporting the towns local businesses.

'The support received from parents and spectators alike was crucial to the atmosphere of the tournament.'

Lacrosse at Sherborne Girls is increasingly popular, with coaches from the USA complementing the Sports Department.

The school recently hosted a lacrosse clinic and tournament for local Primary and Preparatory schools with over 100 players participating, offering children aged 10-13 the opportunity to play the game.

English Lacrosse CEO David Shuttleworth commends Sherborne for their dedication to the success of the event, stating 'National Schools is not only the biggest and most prestigious Lacrosse tournament of the year, but running over 4 days it is one of the biggest schools tournaments in any sport featuring over 150 teams and nearly 2,500 players.'

'It is a massive job for English Lacrosse to organise the event but we could not have done it without the help and cooperation of Sherborne School who provide such excellent facilities.'
