Boardman and Steelers batting it out for Division Two title
By Neil Goulding
TITLE-chasers Boardman and Eccles slipped up at the weekend at home to Stockport A in the Men's North of England League Division Two.
The league leaders were held to a frustrating 13-13 at Welbeck Road, a result which has given title-rivals Sheffield Steelers a glimmer of hope in their bid to win the division.
Boardman remain favourites for the No 1 spot, but having missed out on a place in this season's Junior Flags final after a shock semi-final defeat to Ashton-under-Lyne, the first team's emphasis is solely focused on being crowned domestic champions.
Max Leonard, Chris Brown and Andy Ostrusky all scored hat-tricks for the hosts, John Grubisic bagged a brace, with Dave McCulloch and Mike Ford also on target.
But the club's first draw in 14 matches saw Steelers go level on points, with both sides also locked on the same goal difference.
However, Boardman do have a game in hand on Steelers as the title race looks likely to go down to the wire.
Steelers eased to an 11-2 win away to Cheadle A to keep the pressure on their rivals, it was the South Yorkshire unit's 12th win in 15 games.
Despite missing Rhodrey Evans and Pete Sylvester - both away at the Saloufest festival - Steelers were never in danger.
Ben Lyon top-scored with a hat-trick, while Dave Alcock and Omar Dupree both bagged braces.
Skipper Sam Glover, Mark Colton, Chris Wainer and Alex Williams were also on the scoresheet as Steelers won the opening quarter 3-1 and led 5-1 at half-time.
The visitors won the third quarter 3-1, before scoring three without reply in the final quarter to secure full points.
'It was a very comfortable win for us,' praised Glover. 'We were solid at the back and did a good job on ground balls.
'It was nice to see Boardman draw, we had been hoping Stockport would turn them over, but we've pulled a point back. It could be very important at the end of the season.'
At the bottom end of the division bottom club Stopfordians are the first side to be relegated following an agonising 10-9 defeat to fellow strugglers Manchester Waconians A.
With only three fixtures remaining, Stops cannot now catch Wacs who are nine points ahead of them.
Second-from-bottom Cheadle A are four points behind Wacs, but have three games in hand on the South Manchester side as they bid to avoid the drop.
Nottingham's battling 7-6 win away to promoted Ashton has taken them clear of the relegation battle and secured their safety in the second tier of the NOE League.
