The U12 and U16 nationals was stage at Malvern St James School on Sunday. The event sponsored by Intersport Monkhouse drew ten U12 teams and nine U16 teams. The day was blessed with excellent weather if some what cold.
The U12 tournament saw two groups of five teams battling it out to secure places in the semi finals. In group 1 Sheffield Steelers won all their games to finish top. Second place was secured by Brooklands Hulmeians In their final group game narrowly defeating Cheadle Hulme. I Group 2 Timperley headed the table undefeated with Wilmslow in second place. In the semi finals Brooklands Hulmeians convincingly beat Timperley 4-1 to secure their seventh consecutive appearance in the final. Sheffield Steelers took a 4-1 lead only for Wilmslow to dig deep drawing level in regulation time. In extra time Wilmslow scored twice to run out winners 6-4 to claim their first appearance in the final.
The final was end to end with neither side scoring until late on. In the last minute Wilmslow broke the deadlock to win the U12 National Tournament for the first time. Max Hammonds from Wilmslow was voted Most valuable Player in the final and was presented with a Nationals Sweat Shirt donated by Intersport Monkhouse.
The U16 National Tournament was played on a round robin with each team playing four games. At the end of the round robin stage Timperley were top, Sheffield Steelers second ,Cheadle Hulme third and Brooklands Hulmeians fourth. The first semi final saw Timperley out score Cheadle Hulme 1 to 0 to qualify for the final. In the second semi final Sheffield Steelers and Brooklands Hulmeians fought out a very tight game. At the end of regulation time it was one a piece. In over time Brooklands Hulmeians scored twice to take control. Sheffield Steelers scored late on in over time but time ran out and Brooklands Hulmeians progressed to the final.
The final was very tight with both goalkeepers making crucial saves to keep the score 0-0 until the final two minutes of the game. Timperley finally breached Brooklands Hulmeians defence with a goal from Jack Cox and with that goal secured the U16 National Title. William Baxter, Brooklands Hulmeians goalkeeper, was voted the most valuable player in the final and was present with a nationals sweat shirt donated by Intersport Monkhouse.
Chris Wright from Intersport Monkhouse presented the winners medals and trophies to Wilmslow and Timperley. The ELA would like to thank Intersport Monkhouse for their support sponsoring the event donating medals, balls and handouts for each team.
