THIS year's Flags Festival Weekend got underway at Rochdale Lacrosse Club with the Nigel Wayne Trophy.

Timperley B edged Norbury A in last season's final, but this year saw hosts Rochdale - their B team - take on Leeds.

And after a tight match it was the home team who prevailed with a battling 9-8 win.

Next up was the Boys Under-12 Plate final, Rochdale again involved, this time against Manchester Waconians.

Another close encounter was decided by one goal, Rochdale 6-5 victors to make it two titles in as many matches.

In the Stockport Cup, Sheffield University held on for an 8-7 win over Timperley A as another match went to the wire.

Cheadle broke the trend when they beat Brooklands Hulmeians by two clear goals to land the Under-14s Centurian Cup.

Steelers A had plenty to celebrate in the David Beesley Cup final as they impressed with a 12-8 win over Cheadle Hulme.

The South Yorkshire club's weekend got even better a couple of hours later when the first team beat Ashton-under-Lyne to land the Junior Flags title.

And so to Sunday and the final day of the season two-day tournament which, once again, attracted a decent crowd on both days.

Poynton got proceedings underway with a 9-4 win over Brooklands Hulmeians in the Boys Under-12 Onondaga Trophy.

Heaton Mersey emerged 6-5 victors over Sheffield Steelers in the Under-16 Junior and Schools Cup, denying the Abbeydale Sports Club outfit a third title at the finals' weekend.

Rochdale also missed out a treble of titles as the first team were edged 10-8 by Stockport, last season's Senior Flags winners, in the Lancashire Cup final.

A great weekend of lacrosse culminated in Wilmslow beating Mellor, beaten finalists last season, 19-10 in the Senior Flags final. It completed a memorable league and Flags double for the club having also won the Men's North of England League Premier Division crown this season for the first time.
