Sunday 28th June saw Mitcham & Tooting Community Sports Club host The Inaugural Alumni Lacrosse Tournament, where alumni from seven schools competed, in a round-robin, 8-a-side format of the game.
Alumni from as far back as fifteen years were among those competing; many of whom had not touched a stick for years. “Encouraging those who may not have picked up a stick for years to get back on the pitch was a goal; as much as it was to provide an opportunity to catch-up with old school friends and reminisce the ‘Old Days’” said Charlotte Williams, the tournament organiser. In total twelve different alumni classes were represented from between (2000 – 2015) which was exciting.
After some very close fought matches, the final standings were no foregone conclusion. Eventual winners were a strong Berkhamsted team with an unbeaten run, and having played the whole competition with no substitutes. LEH were worthy runners- up, a far too familiar position some may say. One player joked “Classic LEH coming second again”. Maybe next year will be their year?
The day was extremely sociable and even a light sprinkling of rain could not dampen spirits. It was wonderful too, to see so many parents back on the side line, cheering on their daughter once more. The tournament also allowed friendships formed from many years together shivering on the side-line to be reunited.
Support for the tournament not only from players has been encouraging. “Old Berkhamstedians are covering our entry fee” said Emily Grey. “Downe House Alumnae Foundation has offered to sponsor some kit for next year ” added Charlotte Williams (DH). This bodes well for the future of the tournament.
Thanks must be extended to Henning Schmidt and the Mitcham & Tooting Community Sports Club staff, as well as the umpires and helpers who helped make the day a big success.
