Team England battled hard to overcome a strong Israeli side in the 2015 Women’s European Championships semi-final in Nymburk, Czech Republic. This was the first time the two nations have met in an international women’s game.
England got off to a great start with a Sophie Morrill goal in the first 40 seconds of the game. Israel were quick to reply and put England on the back foot for the first time in the tournament, with two back-to-back goals from Halsey Diakow and Courtney Miller.
Israel didn’t need to wait long for England to reply and the reigning champions quickly took control of the game with three goals from Sophie Brett (2) and Sarah Taylor (1) to give England a 4-2 lead. England’s challengers proved to be a dangerous offensive threat with Amanda Tuck and Courtney Miller scoring two more goals to tie the game.
With the game all even, England yet again pushed forward and took control, with four unanswered goals from Sarah Taylor, Torz Anderson, Sophie Brett and Camilla Hayes to give England a 8-4 lead going in to the half.
Israel started the brightest in the second half with two goals to bring the score to within two, England’s fitness began to prove its worth especially in the defence and midfield with some excellent turn overs and clears to give England the platform to extend their lead further with goals from Torz Anderson and Laura Merrifield.
Israel’s Jessica Rothstien added one more to her countries tally, but two back to back from Sophie Brett sealed victory for England, with less than a minute remaining. Israel’s Amanda Tuck would score a consolation goal but it would be England who would be returning to the European Championship Final to defend their title for the 6th time.
In the other semi-final Wales had to fight off a strong Scottish team to earn their place in the 2015 European Championships Final with a 13-7 victory. Watch Team England take on their Home Nations opponents LIVE HERE – Saturday 2pm BST.
