England Men’s Head Coach, Tom Wenham, has Today (20 December) announced his 23-man squad for the 2018 FIL Men’s World Championships in Israel.
The selection process took place over an intensive couple of weekends at the Men’s Winter Classic, serving as the Men’s national trials across at Platt Lane Sports Complex and the Manchester Regional Arena, with 80 players representing the best English talent competing against each other in a series of matches under the assessment of the National Squad coaching staff.
The squad selected contains a strong mix of both youth and experience with Andrew Baxter, Tommy Kirkland, Sam Patterson, Sam Russell and Nick Watson all retaining their places from the 2014 World Championships in Denver where England maintained their position in the Blue Division with a 5th place finish, while 15 of the squad were part of last year’s victorious European Championship team.
Of the newcomers to the Senior squad, Hal Dwobeng, Tim Collins, and Alex Russell will all be able to draw on recent World Championships experience after being a part of the England Under 19s at the 2016 U19 World Championships in Coquitlam, Canada.
After selecting the squad, Tom Wenham remarked that the selection process was extremely challenging for the assessors over the two weekends.
Wenham said: “All the coaches are very excited about the squad we’ve been able to select, and it certainly wasn’t an easy decision in finalising the 23 players selected.
“There’s a great mixture of experience, along with players who have made the jump up from the U19s and we’re really looking forward to working with this squad over the coming months as the preparations and intensity builds towards Israel.
“We have also selected a number of alternates to cover all positions who will continue to be involved with the squad and will mean we have a group of replacements fully prepared to step in if required”.
The group will first meet in early January as they travel out to Portugal to play a series of games against NCAA Div III side, Haverford College as the American side prepare for their upcoming 2018 season.
