Team England to face Israel on Pre-World Championships tour

Team England will play Israel in a five-game series in April as the squad continue preparations for the 2018 FIL Men’s World Championships in Netanya, Israel.

England will take on the World Championships hosts in a full schedule that will be an important part of the pre-tournament preparations in acclimatising to the conditions and surroundings in Israel ahead of the July tournament.

Team England have met Israel twice in international competition in recent years and both matches were thrilling encounters in which the English boys came through both times; 10-9 (OT) at the 2014 World Championships and 7-6 in the final of the 2016 European Championships.

Israel recently announced a 30-man training roster packed with plenty of NCAA and MLL experience ahead of their home World Championships which should provide fierce competition to Team England across the series in April.

The five-match series, with each game taking place in a different Israeli city, allows Team England to see different parts of Israel and promote the game throughout the country to Israel’s growing lacrosse community with the game on the Friday in Ashkelon also televised live in Israel.

And although the primary goal for the tour will be to continue preparations for competition at the top of the world stage, Head Coach, Tom Wenham, is also aware of the extra benefits of the group visiting Israel for the first time.

“Israel Lacrosse have put together an itinerary that helps us see a bit of Israel,” Wenham said.

“It gives us the opportunity to broaden the horizons of our guys and give them exposure to a country the vast majority of them haven’t visited before.

“To be able to light that fire in a youngster, that’s a really powerful opportunity to be a part of. I know our guys have done that on other tours we’ve been on, that’s something that should be treasured, and I’m absolutely sure it will”.
