This Friday Team England are travelling to Hamburg, Germany to participate in a International Invitational Lacrosse Tournament as part of as part of their preparation for the European Championships to be held in August in the Czech Republic. We caught up with Team England Director of Lacrosse Phil Collier to find out more about the tour.
Can you tell us about the tour and the team you are taking to Hamburg?
We have selected a squad of 21 players to take part in the tournament. This is not a full strength England team, as we are taking the opportunity to take a closer look at some of the squad’s younger players, including three who are currently playing at college in the USA. We are also seeking to give this group valuable experience of playing at the International level. That said, we think we have a very good team and will be aiming to do well at the tournament.
Who will you be playing in Hamburg?
Over the weekend we will be playing four games against: a Hamburg club team as well as the Netherlands, Finland and Germany national teams.
What do you hope to achieve from the tour?
Following this tournament, we will be looking to select at least four or five players from this squad to be members of our European Championship team. Besides seeing our own young players in action, we will be looking to further develop our own playing strategies and experimenting with different player combinations to try and identify those that work best for the team.
Although our focus is on the performance of our own team, we will also have chance to play against and scout a number of the other European nations, in particular Finland who we will meet again in our pool group at the European Championships. Finally, the whole trip will give us a chance to test and fine tune our off field team management practices, ahead of the European Championships – travelling overseas together as a group for the first time, match day routines, physio support, living together in tournament conditions etc All helping us to be in the best shape possible come the European Championships.
These are exciting times for the England women’s team, and we are looking forward to getting our summer off to a great start with a successful and enjoyable trip to Hamburg over the bank holiday weekend. #mightieryet
