Cheadle win the North of England Men’s Lacrosse Association Premier Division, defeating Stockport 11-7 on the final day of the season.
After two back-to-back defeats at the hands of Heaton Mersey, the champions needed a win to guarantee premiership victory over Stockport, who needed just a draw.
Cheadle were controlled throughout, possessing the ball for long periods and executing their game plan effectively. Sam Dexter was the first to score and was impressive throughout the game.
Stockport levelled the scores in the second quarter, only for Cheadle to open up a four-goal lead before end of the half. Stockport managed to reduce that margin in the third, however Cheadle continued their dominance and went on another four-goal run in the final period to successfully defend the NEMLA Premiership title.
Ben McAllister had an impressive game for Stockport, making 19 saves, however he and his defence could not stop the pressure in the final quarter.
Chris Brady was instrumental at the face-off X winning vital possession at key moments of the game. Stockport was not without success however, but could not stop the lion share of possession going to Cheadle.
Cheadle’s goals were shared evenly with Sam Dexter, Glen Humphreys, Darren Baythorpe and Paul Flowers each scoring two goals. Ady Bennett, Nick Watson and LDO Sean Wright contributed a single goal each for the green and gold.
For Stockport, Tom Patterson and Tom Gosnay led the charge for the boys in blue with two goals each. Chris Bland, Lewis Curtis and Greg Rowlinson each contributed a goal.
In the other fixtures at the weekend, Timperley handled Sheffield with relative ease beating the Steelers 14-4. Brooklands secured a forth victory of the season beating Manchester Wacs 10-6. Heaton Mersey was awarded the points against Poynton after they conceded the fixture.
The lacrosse action continues this weekend with the quarterfinals of the NEMLA Senior Flags. Cheadle continues their quest for the double hosting Poynton. Stockport face Manchester Wacs, Brooklands will host Timperley and Heaton Mersey face Sheffield Steelers in the other quarterfinal games.
Draws for the semi-finals that are due to take place following Saturdays fixtures.
