Poynton Lacrosse Club complete the 2013/14 season as treble winners yet again (a feat they last achieved in 2008), with a hard fought victory over Brooklands in the Cup Final on Sunday. This was the culmination of a season which saw victory at the Ted Donnet Trophy, followed by success in the Conference A League.
The 2014 U19 Cup Final proved to be another exciting encounter, with the top two teams in the league battling it out in a closely contested finale.
Brooklands started the game cautiously with their defense implementing a well-drilled 6-man zone, this forced Poynton to change their game plan to unlock their defense.
The battle at face-off was to be a crucial factor in the game, with Poynton’s Ben Reddy going up against Brooklands Tim Collins, with the two sharing win percentages in the first quarter.
The Blackbirds took advantage of two EMO plays to go into the second quarter with a two-goal lead with goals from Josh Noël and Scott Dagnenleach.
The second period saw Poynton relax and allow Brooklands back in the game with Collins getting the better of Ben Reddy in the middle, allowing Brooklands to control possession get on the scoreboard. At the end of the second period the score was tied 2-2.
The third period saw the game open up and the intensity go up a level.
Brooklands Dino Jones had a particularly impressive performance on the defensive end of the field and was instrumental in causing turnovers for Brooklands. He was also dangerous offensively, turning defense into offence and creating a lot of transition opportunities for his team. Poynton responded to Jones by tasking Joe Chorlton to contain him, stopping his threat on goal in transition.
Brooklands found their groove at the end of the third period and scored three unanswered goals to knock the wind out of Poynton’s sails, which gave them a 5-2 lead at the end of the period.
The final period saw Poynton chasing a three-goal deficit and winning possession of the ball at the face-off became a priority. Poynton standout LSM Ben Reddy did not let his teammates down, winning all his draws in the final period, giving Poynton valuable possession and a springboard to get a foothold back in the game.
Poynton’s ball movement became quicker and with more purpose, with Alex Huntley capping off a great performance with a superb outside finish to make it 5-3.
Poynton’s co-captain Josh Robinson went to goal and was unlucky not to score but drew a penalty and gave Poynton a man up which Matt Rowarth converted to make it 5-4.
Poynton won yet another possession from the middle, and after an excellent individual play by Alex Russell, the Blackbirds tied the game 5-5 with three minutes remaining.
Match MVP Ben Reddy won another, and probably the most important face of the game, which allowed Poynton to attack the Brooklands goal yet again. Some excellent attacking play allowed Josh Noël to win the game with 22 seconds remaining.
In the final face-off Ben Reddy came up with the ball from the middle yet again, which allowed Cairan Johnson to kill the clock and win the game for Poynton.
