National POP finals

The national finals is not an event to be taken lightly, it is serious business. All the teams who attend have qualified from Regional competitions and have more than earned the right to compete at the highest level. Squads, teachers, families and supporters all come with the belief that they could win the coveted National Pop Champions Trophy. This makes for an electric atmosphere.

The day begins at 10.30 and pop lacrosse is played non stop on two pitches until 3.30. After playing a round-robin tournament, the top two teams from each of the four groups are placed into the championship knockout, while the third and fourth placed teams from the group phase go into a plate tournament.

The Downs Primary (North Somerset) beat the defending champions William Ransom Primary School (Hertfordshire) at the group stage, and scored more goals than any other team during qualifying. This set them up with a quarterfinal match-up against three-time champions Bowden Primary (Cheshire), but even they couldn’t stop Downs from scoring as the Somerset school cruised into the semi-finals 11 - 5.

The only other team to emerge with a perfect record after the round-robin stage was St. Johns On The Hill Primary School (South Wales), but unfortunately this put them on a collision course with William Ransom in the quarter finals, a game which the 2006 Champions took 10 - 4. 2005 Champions Greenmount Primary (Manchester) defeated newcomers St. Ronan’s (Kent) 6 - 5, and Kings Court (Portsmouth), who won the Plate Final in 2001, edged out the competitions smallest ever qualifier – Sandon JMI (Hertfordshire) 5 - 4 in overtime to complete the quarter-final games.

The semi-finals went strictly to form with both Downs and William Ransom winning out in convincing fashion, leaving the two teams to battle it out in a rematch of their earlier group game. Despite their extra experience in the championship game William Ransom couldn’t stop the Downs offence as they continued to score almost at will. The final score of 11 - 7 meant that Downs were not only the 2007 National Pop Lacrosse Champions, but they were also the only team to put up double digits on the scoreboard in every game they played, making them more than worthy victors.

St. Peters C of E Primary (Nottingham) claimed the plate trophy defeating Mellor Primary. It’s a Family Affair William Ransom has an impressive attendance history at the National Finals. Runners up in the Championship in 2007 and winners in 2006 Pop Lacrosse is an important part of school life. This was displayed by three ex pupils, who themselves played in the Finals in 2005 coming along to give their support to their old school and younger brothers and sisters.
